Holiday Happiness Helps

Dr. Bea Lovejoy

Job loss, divorce, death, a family member serving in the military – these life changing situations require us to do the holidays and Christmas differently.  Trying to pretend that we’re not grieving or that nothing has changed just makes the situation worse.  Dealing with the grief from a major loss demands honesty about our feelings and needs.  We are well versed and practiced in protecting ourselves from pain by hiding it away, and holding tight to that secret.

The high level of excitement coupled with holiday celebrations can cause our feelings of anger, sadness, loneliness and depression to become more intense than usual.  Taking loving care of all our needs – physical, emotional and spiritual – must become number one on our daily agenda.  Talking with a trusted friend or counselor can provide the support and encouragement we need to get through difficult moments.

For parents, creating practical ways to deal with the stress inherent in the holiday schedule can empower them to be more available to the needs of their children.  Kids of all ages must have safe opportunities to openly express their feelings, whatever they might be, and have them accepted.  Parents may not be comfortable initiating a conversation that is likely to bring out strong emotions in their children or in themselves.  A session with a family counselor can be helpful as each member shares, asks questions and determines how they can create new rituals that will bring hope and meaning to the holiday season this year.
